into the loop - comp.mp3
Edited Feb 2007 - originally created sometime in 2004.
Leaving no stone unturned, this piece is a result of creating 4 extended loops from a continuous 25 minute excursion with Paul and cass on samplers and a later Cass guitar track. Some well used Cruel Machine samples flown in and giving some indication of the age of this track. Had completely forgotton about this and just as a quick exercise cut 4 loops (and joined them for this upload).
Personnel: Samplers: Cass and Paul / Guitar: Cass

while sorting guitar levels pre recording session, Cass hit on to a loop and Paul improv'd some on the pedal steel. We'd pretty much overlooked it until one of us remembered that we did do something that felt OK and the next problem was where the hell did we place it? A bit of digging around uncovered something that was a whole lot longer than we remembered and not too bad in it's own right (although we have plans to dismember and recreate sometime soon...)
Date of Recording: Late January 2006
Personnel: Cass: Guitar. Paul: Pedal Steel

Closer
The one that got away!!! From the original Cruel Machine sessions bearing a similar stylistic dynamic to "Le Sabateur".
Currently being rendered and remixed in Ableton Live, in full looped out euro-psych aesthetic bliss.
Personnel: Paul S - drums, gongs. Paul - 12 string electric. Cass - synth, acetone, vibes, piano, organ, arrangement.

death machine
A very raw tail end of a drum and guitar excursion. Pretty much an afterthought although the intensity and dynamic were too irresistable to go unnoticed (or unedited). The jury's still out on whether we'll do any more on this one as it's a pretty heavy sound given it consists of drums and guitar only. Time will tell...
Personnel: Paul- 12 string electric, Paul S - drums, Cass - Tape Ops.

Swarm
Over the past 6 months we have devoted a lot of our time to revolutionising our production process by using Ableton Live software to reconstruct sound works from selected wav files in extended protools jams. Bohemian Astronaut on Cruel Machine was created this way, although we did play all parts specifically for looping in Live and thus generating the final piece. Trawling through what we would have initially discarded, we discovered nice parts in certain places and found that unrelated documents contained performances that fit almost too perfectly. With "Swarm" you will hear Paul S's drums, pedal steel and tape noise, synth, tabla and sampled sounds. Watch this space for further embellishments and final mixes as we approach an "extraordinary rendition".

Salvage
This little piece of free form interwovenness was originally laid down as part of an extended off the cuff, adlib with Cass and Paul dating back to sometime in 2004. Somehow the protools document was unopenable due to a "DAE" error for the best part of 18 months and went untirely unconsidered, although I vaguely recalled we did something OK. It's pretty much a standard greyscale meander, live, unedited and part of a much longer piece. Somehow, inexpicably, the document opened and here is what we salvaged...
Personnel: Paul - pedal steel, sampler. Cass - guitar.

Indian Summer
An exercise in efficient use of limited time. Paul and Cass, playing to click track, free forming on 12 string electric and banjo on a theme for approx 5 minutes, then editing down and structuring the bones of the piece. Subsequent, drums, bass and farfisa laid down.
Personel: Cass - 12 string, bass, farfisa. Paul - banjo, drums, triangle.

An off the cuff, live thing that's pretty much as it was done during early 2005.There are a couple of edits here and there and an overdubbed 12 string. Personel: Cass - Synth Bass, Paul: 12 string electric, Paul S- drums.
